This Briefing Paper provides a background to attempts by the Bangladesh government to promote economic growth and reviews the economic progress of Bangladesh since independence. It assesses the prospects for the Bangladesh economy and considers some policy changes currently advocated for a more effective realisation of the economic potential of the country.
